MBTA Cabot North Yard Project involves the full depth replacement of the loop track and 11 storage tracks within the north portion of the yard along with significant traction power, electrical/communications and drainage improvements. Overall the project includes 6,370TF of full depth track reconstruction, installation of 3,750lf of traction power duct bank (36,000lf of 5in conduit), 3,600lf of new electrical/communication duct bank as well as 3,400lf replacement of new 12in track drainage and related castings and structures. Installation of new duct banks and drainage required removal of existing asbestos containing duct bank and drainage pipes and working around existing utilities to remain. Project also encompasses a major change order for completing the traction power duct bank installation to their tie-in points in Traction Power Substation #36 (TPSS#36) by creating new underground duct bank openings in TPSS#36 basement, along with full yard paving.

All work took place in stages while Cabot Yard remained active and in use on a daily basis by the MBTA. Short-term full yard outages were scheduled and coordinated with the MBTA to eventually cut over power to the new traction power feeds that were installed. During each stage, a pair of tracks were demolished, new cast in place traction power and electrical/communications duct banks installed along with new track drainage, and finally the track structure was reconstructed. This project marks major infrastructure improvements to the Red Line’s primary maintenance and storage facility in South Boston, keeping the facility ready to serve riders for years to come.
